May Fair Champions 2010!

AFC TPS have won the annual Ballyclare Principals' Association May Fair tournament for 2010.

After a disappointing performance at the Antrim 7 a side tournament, the team were determined to put things right this week, and they did so in style. Four wins and a draw left them undefeated and champions by three points at the first May Fair to be held indoors at the Soccer Shed in Ballyclare.

Stats to follow, thanks to Mrs Stardust for the photos.

Report from 7 a side tournament to follow.

In the meantime..... look at this............

Friday 30 April 2010

St. Joseph's (Antrim) 0 AFC TPS 3

Wow! What a performance!

Each and every AFC TPS player played their best match of the season- SO FAR - today, just when it was needed. The passing and teamwork was excellent throughout the team and throughout the match. How we went in for half time at 0-0 is still a mystery!

The break brought another of Mr Cooper's now legendary half time team talks, reminding the team that they were playing super football and that the goals would come. Not surprisingly, AFC TPS then went back out, upped their game even further, determined to prove Mr Cooper correct.

The defence held firm throughout with Adam pulling off one particularly stunning and vital save, while Aaron continued his superb form in the centre of defence. Eventually the pressure paid off when Harry opened the scoring with a shot that had goal written all over it the moment it left his boot. Johnston then added a second and Jake knocked in his first of the season after great run from the right wing.

With every player playing so well, player of the match should be a tough choice this time round - but it isn't! With the game so tense, Andrew and Dylan didn't get a run out today, but they both have already played a big part in our season and remain a vital part of the squad. Adam, Oliver, Peter M and Peter L, Ross, Graeme, Jake and Johnston played fantastically, Harry and Aaron had outstanding games, while Daniel had not only his best game ever for the school, but possibly one of the finest performances ever in an AFC TPS shirt.

This makes it 5 wins out of 5 in the 1 a side league, with our performances improving with each match. Three games to go to retain our title!

Greystone 1 AFC TPS 2

Well, if we retain........ sorry WHEN we retain our league title this season, we will look back on today's match and realise that today was the day that made the difference.

The first half today was all Greystone - and deservedly so. They were first to every ball, they had pace and aggression, and they just wanted it much more than any of our players did.

We came in at half time one nil down, the result of a lack of communication in defence, followed by a super finish from out wide by a Greystone striker.

It was obvious that what was needed was quite simple : 100% more will to win and aggression. It was Mr Cooper who provided the inspiration. Having noticed that the referee was happy to let the game be the physical game that it should be, he let the team know quite clearly what was needed to turn the game around.

And so out we went for the second half and what a change! Suddenly AFC TPS wanted every ball, made every challenge, passed with precision and moved with pace. The game remained tight and it took a trademark surge from captain Daniel to provide the equaliser. His shot from the right was turned into the net by a Greystone defender for a very unfortunate own goal. As Daniel was the last AFC TPS player to touch the ball, the goal goes to him.

With the scores level, AFC TPS knew the time to go for the winner was now. Within a minute of the kick off, Harry, excelling in his new left wing position had won a free kick 25 yards from goal. Harry picked himself up, and thinking quicker than anyone on the pitch - or than any of the chipmunks or chipettes on the sidelines - hammered an unstoppable shot past the 'keeper to give his team the lead. The precision and skill required for this goal - 25 yards out, into 7 a side nets against a giant 'keeper - makes it our goal of the season so far.

Now in the lead, AFC TPS kept the pressure on, but still had to survive a few scares in defence, before they recorded their 3rd 11 a side league victory out of 3 this season.

Aaron had another excellent game in defence, yelling encouragement at his team mates - and letting then know when he wasn't happy with them! Exactly what we need from the whole squad. Daniel gave his usual captain's performance and both Peters showed in the second half the kind of performances that are expected at all times. But player of the match has to go to Harry for such a brilliant - and vital - goal. And yes Harry, there is a match next Friday!

Here's the stats..... (still can't find the 5 a side results - email me if you can remember!)

AFC TPS 3 Parkhall 0

A second 11 a side league win for AFC TPS today, with this 3 nil home victory over Parkhall. You may have noticed that it wasn't actually at home, what with home at present being a big muddy field where there used to be a school! It does count as our home game though, which is why I ended up being what is officially known as "the referee". You may also not noticed that this is what I was doing standing about in the middle with a whistle.

On to the match ..... constant pressure from AFC TPS led eventually to the opening goal as captain Daniel broke down the right before crossing low for Johnston who showed his true striker's instinct by carefully placing the ball wide of the keeper, back in the direction from which it had come - the hardest kind of shot for any 'keeper to deal with. Quite a long sentence there.

The defence of Aaron, Oliver, Peter and Graeme worked very well together, limiting Parkhall to very few real chances throughout the first half. Ross, Daniel, Jake and Dylan combined well in midfield to provide Harry and Johnston with further chances. With a 1 nil half time lead, AFC TPS knew that they would come under more pressure with Parkhall playing down the slope in the second half.

This was true as a physical encounter continued well into the second half before Johnston added a second and then a third to complete his hat trick. Adam A was called into service in nets a little more and proved that he had regained his confidence with some excellent handling and kicking. Adam D came on in the second half and slotted into defence well, giving Graeme the opportunity to play in his preferred attacking midfield role.

Despite being a physical match, all the players sportingly shook hands at the end, and it was particularly good to see the two players who had been spoken to during the match shaking and walking off together.

So overall, a pleasing performance, and an excellent result giving us two wins from two as we seek to defend our league title.

There were three outstanding performances today, as usual from captain Daniel, as well as from Johnston and Aaron. A tough choice, but player of the match is going to Aaron, a player who often goes unnoticed, but who just does the simple things well. Today he added just a touch of aggression to his game, which wins him the award.
